|Stan Lee:||Look, man, if you're out for a rumble, how about havin' it in Genosha or somewhere? Me, I'm a professional non-combatant!|
|Magneto:||You think I came to battle YOU? Does the lion battle a chicken? Does the tiger battle a poodle?|
|Stan Lee:||I--never thought of it--that way.|
“Are you here to condemn me?” he asked.
“No,” said Charles.
“Then you are here to redeem me,” said Bane. “A foolish errand.”
“You think yourself beyond redemption?” asked Charles.
“Aren’t we all?” said Bane."
“I can fix this,” he says plainly. “It’s what I’ve been working on. A new cure. I need to isolate the gene responsible first—”
*Hank*. Charles voice is like steel in his mind, and Hank turns back around. The Professor looks as angry and as sincere as he has ever seen him. *Have you learned nothing from the events of this past week? I know you’re probably confused and scared, but Alex needs our support right now just as much as he ever did—*
The Beast lets out a howl like a wounded animal, and Hank is shoving memories at Charles, begging him to understand— getting caught kissing Lyle Bowman in the bathroom and being sent to that awful place; there is something fundamentally wrong with you, but you must resist temptation; Bigfoot and Bozo and now a Homo too; all he wants to do is reach across and touch his lab partner, but he can’t risk that again; Alex is right there all the time and refuses to be ignored, no matter how many times Hank tries; he’s woken up in a wet spot again, Alex’s dimples still etched in his mind, and Hank just prays that Charles didn’t pick up on anything this time—
Calm your mind, Hank hears in his head. *You’re safe now.* Hank opens his eyes— when did they close?— and sees Charles staring at him, tears falling.
A memory— not his own— snakes his way into his mind. It’s Erik, looking more tender than Hank had ever known him to be, and he feels love like fire burn in Charles’s mind. ‘I love, I love, I love you,’ Erik says, and Hank feels like the worst sort of voyeur, but the love pouring into and from and around Charles’s mind is like the best drug in the world. Slowly, the scene fades, and Hank is staring at Charles in his lab again.
“There is absolutely,” Charles says out loud, “not one single thing about you that isn’t perfect. You don’t need a cure for your mutation or anything else.”
Hank sits silently in the lab for a long time after the Professor leaves."
