This was such a great moment in this comic. There is the one sudden spark of cliched heroism as Magneto tells the humans to back away and wait for the rest of the X-Men to show up to escort them all to safety. It’s just something a superhero would typically say in a situation like this, when he has to contain his adversary, but doesn’t want anymore casualties. Granted, I doubt Magneto was thinking along those lines. He was probably more concerned with finishing off Joseph without an invasive audience.
Either way, this act is met with the dismissal from the human survivors and in the true spirit of bigotry they continue to accost Magneto with slurs. Let’s ignore the fact that one would have to possess the most profound sense of stupidity in order to believe they could insult Magneto and still walk away with their lives.
The following panel just seems to display an overwhelming sense of weariness with the ignorance of humans. And more than that, just general disappointment that humans seem incapable of breaking out of this cycle of ignorance. So much so, that I really could have cared less when Magneto chose to drop the rest of the stadium down around their heads.
I wonder how much of this little limited series is going to effect Magneto in terms of further character development with the X-Men? I sincerely hope this idea of him questioning himself in terms of the binary idea of villain and hero continue, because in essence he is neither of the two, but I do enjoy watching a character wrestle with that conflict.
I really like “good” Erik. And he’s been trying so hard to play by the rules, to be a part of the mutant community, to be an X-Man, that the thought of him reverting to his previous “I-hate-everyone-I-can-only-count-on-myself” state makes my skin crawl. And I’m afraid that that’s exactly what’s gonna happen as a result of that X-Men vs Avengers storyline…
